Lymphatic Drainage

In order to understand lymphatic drainage therapy, first we need to understand what lymph is. Lymph is a clear fluid found in the lymphatic system – this fluid collects waste, bacteria, and toxic substances from the tissues of the body. The tiny vessels of the lymphatic system carry the fluid to lymph nodes that filter and clean the lymph. When lymph does not move sufficiently, toxins build up around cells and waste proteins accumulate, affecting the health of the cells and tissues.

Lymphatic drainage therapy is a light, feathery massage performed with fingers to redirect the flow of lymphatic fluid in the body. Therapists employ precise rhythm, pressure, and direction of massage to clear stagnant fluid from lymph nodes. Encouraging the flow of lymph in tissues and lymph nodes helps to remove waste products from the body, which may improve overall health. The session starts with light massage on the surface of the skin of the neck. Using very light pressure the therapist gently moves the skin, following the vessels of the lymphatic system and moving toward lymph nodes, so that accumulated lymph fluid can drain out of the tissues. Lymphatic drainage is very gentle and is not painful.

People who have compromised immune systems, feel sick all the time, or have frequent illnesses may benefit from lymphatic drainage therapy. People who develop lymphedema (for example, after surgery for breast cancer, injuries affecting the lymphatic system, or other surgical interventions) may also benefit from this treatment.

This technique is offered at Synergy Healthcare in Spokane Valley by Shauna Burchett, OT, Heather Shipley, DPT and Nora Graebner, PTA.
