Frequency-Specific Microcurrent for Neuropathic Pain

Frequency-Specific Microcurrent for Neuropathic Pain

Frequency-Specific Microcurrent (FSM) has been used in numerous practices for the past ten years with positive results. Neuropathic pain caused by strokes and phantom limb pain have been successfully treated using this revolutionary method. FSM works by the utilization of square-wave pulses that dramatically increase protein synthesis and energy production. Pain begins to drop within minutes of the treatment starting and continues to drop until leveling off at the 60-minute mark. Burn patients that received this treatment experienced lasting increases in their range of motion. The best part of this system is that according to a 2010 study by Carolyn McMakin, MA, DC, “no patients reported or complained of negative side effects either during or after treatment. The most common side effect is a sense of euphoria presumably caused by an increase in endorphins.” In the same study, recipients of one treatment reported a decrease from an average initial pain score of 6.8/10 to 1.8/10. A second treatment resulted in a decrease in average pain from 4.8/10 to 1/10. This trend of lower post-treatment pain scores was consistent among all treatments in this study. After the treatment was completed, 65% of patients fully recovered from nerve pain. One patient even bought a small FSM machine for home use. McMakin also reported that “all patients reported some reduction in pain with treatment.” Her conclusion was more forthright when she stated: “treatment is noninvasive, low-risk, widely available, relatively inexpensive, and appears to have no significant side effects.”

This treatment is used as part of a comprehensive approach including specific manual therapy techniques, exercise prescription, and diet modification. We are starting to see changes in clients who have had long-standing neuropathic pain, post-concussion syndrome, migraines, and scar tissue that affects their lymphatic flow and postural imbalances. We have also seen changes with peripheral neuropathy, improved bone healing with fractures, decreased symptoms with COPD, and decreases in anxiety.

Frequency specific microcurrent as an independent modality is not covered by insurance. If used during other treatments, we consider the FSM treatment to be bundled with other techniques including manual therapy and exercise prescription. Frequency and duration of care are dependent on the diagnosis. We have priced non-bundled FSM treatment at about one dollar per minute. Some protocols run 20 minutes, while some run over 80 minutes.

Frequency-Specific Microcurrent is an effective tool to reduce and effectively manage chronic pain. This breakthrough in technology is now being offered at Synergy Healthcare today. Come see how we can help you or your loved ones experience life more pain-free!
